Soccer Action Excerpts 1980-1987

Soccer Action was a Melbourne-based weekly soccer newspaper out of the Fairfax stable, largely run under the editorship of Laurie Schwab.

This is Tasmanian only content from a very interesting period of the game in our State, marked by an influx of quality imports and various attempts to get a Tasmanian team in the national competition.

About Me

I have been involved with the White Eagle Sports Club for over 45 years, firstly as a spectator then as player, administrator and coach both at a junior and senior level.

This history has largely been based upon newspaper articles of the day and includes game previews and reviews as well as snippets of important or interesting events that help build a picture of the time. In more recent times blog entries from Football Australia hall of famer Walter Pless have been crucial, due to the poor newspaper coverage in southern Tasmania.

Walter’s help in accessing the Gordon Burnett era press clippings was invaluable and much appreciated. Photos have been gathered from all kinds of sources and where possible I have attributed an owner to them but not all. Please let me know if a photo needs attributing to its source.

This history is continually being updated, so if anyone has any articles or photos relating to the Club that would help to enhance the content, including any opposition team photos particularly for major matches that Eagles were involved with would be gratefully received.
